The Look: ELLERY Resort '17, Aristocratic, progressive and highly provocative.

Exploring the individual female personas in cult film, ‘The Holy Mountain’, and their diverse characteristics, played a central role when designing the Resort’17 collection. As a result, this alchemistic range sees ELLERY move into a new psychedelic realm.

Directed by film legend Alejandro Jodorowsky and produced by Beatles manager Allen Klein in 1973, ‘The Holy Mountain’ is a visionary work of art house cinema. The various female symbolist characters in the film range from; the alchemist’s silent assistant, a weapons manufacturer from the planet Mars, both the wife and lover to a millionaire art dealer, war toy maker of planet Saturn and a group of prostitutes, one with a pet ape.

Legend goes, that before the principal photography commenced, Jodorowsky and his wife spent a week without sleep under the direction of a Japanese Zen master. Taking cue from this experimentalist behavior as well as the film’s singular aesthetic vision, the Resort ’17 collection is infused with a fury of colour and many dramatic riffs inspired by classic 70’s iconography.

Fabric choices, as always, are anchored in the luxurious however this season they take on an audacious twist. Silk lurex and jacquard velvets harmoniously coexist while Japanese gabardine and Korean techno twill bring in a new mood.

Staying true to the ELLERY signature, a classically monochromatic colour palette reigns; however, the Resort ’17 collection brings with it playful shocks of colour. From flamingo pink and lipstick red all the way to khaki, midnight and liquid silver, the palette is spicy. A blazing woodcut floral print also features in red and white as well as sunny yellow.

Volume is explored through the use of gathered ruffles and shirring across both sculptural and fluid silhouettes. Flashes of skin are revealed with slashed sleeves, circular cut outs and vertiginous splits all creating dimensional space.

Suits are reinterpreted with fresh proportions, made from Italian suiting and textured calico. Garment details are illustrious; hefty gold hardware, zigzag stitching, circular metal studs and glossy D rings. Meanwhile round metallic buttons boldly punctuate blazers, trousers, and fluid silk dresses alike.

Aristocratic, progressive and highly provocative - Resort’17 presents a dizzying display of looks that are, as always, designed to empower the wearer and create clothes for women of excellence.
