Electric sekki. have recently added Ellery to our growing brand portfolio and we had the pleasure of sitting down with the designer, Kym Ellery, of the cult favourite brand on her two-day stopover in Hong Kong. Incredibly busy, she was on her way back to her native Australia to present a special new evening dress collection at Sydney Fashion Week on Monday night. There’s no rest for the wicked!
Upon meeting Kym, she has a beautiful aura that attracts you to her warm and friendly personality. Kym talks of excitement of the debut of Ellery’s Spring Summer 14 Collection in Paris last September, “It is an amazing journey and something I have always endeavored to work the brand toward and to show the collection continually. The crazy experience of showing in Paris was overwhelmed with my feeling of accomplishment and achievement!”
Ellery Fall Winter 2014
Before starting her own label, Kym worked at Russh Magazine for 4 years as an integral part of their creative team. Kym explains that making the transition from publication to commerce taught her a lot and the experience in media has helped tremendously in her path to becoming a designer and creating a brand. “It was an invaluable experience, I learnt how things operated and were interconnected, what everyone’s roles in the industry were and made great, supportive friends.” It is here Kym worked incredibly hard, leaving the development of her line in the evening and early mornings. “That’s what I would say to aspiring designers, you have to work hard and be invested, it’s a lifestyle, not a job!”
Ellery Fall Winter 2014
Each collection Ellery creates has a fresh perspective and different inspirations are obvious for each season. For her upcoming Fall Winter collection, Ellery explains she was inspired by the ancient religion of Zoroastrian, and the themes of light and tradition. Paisley has been re-interpreted into artful prints “the shape becomes a three dimensional object” with hues of blue highlighting the netural palette.
Ellery explains her “background is art and I was enrolled to do architecture and pulled out to study fashion but still architecturally inspired", this Fall season the volume of the garments move around the body coming out from the hips but still give a very close shape.
Ellery channels her creativity into her namesake collection, which blends tailored, architectural silhouettes with colourful, graphic prints and a tomboy-femme aesthetic with her love of structured, fashion-forward cuts. Ellery’s Spring Summer collection is available now at Lane Crawford.
