pre-fall 2014: sass & bide

While 2013 was a big year for the sass & bide girls (Sarah-Jane and Heidi showed at New York Fashion Week and opened up their first international flagship in New York's trendy soho district), we think 2014 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for them.  Sarah-Jane Clarke spent the year of 2013 on what she called her 'sabbatical'; it was a chance for her to explore the world with her family, travelling from the Negev Desert to the Galapagos Islands and much of the inspiration within this collection seems to have come from her wanderlust spirit.  Graphic prints and metallics were mixed in with wildlife motifs and embellishments.  The collection is the perfect balance between sleek urbanism and whimsical fancy.  And we can't wait to wear it all.

pre-fall 2014: house of holland

The inspiration for House of Holland's Pre-Fall 2014 collection is clear: cheeky English private school girls.  Henry takes his label back to his English roots this season, with a collection that features English school staples, revamped with a fun and sexy twist.  Uniform-like skirts are shrunken to micro-mini lengths and cardigans and knitwear are updated in fun colours to create a more modern approach to this style of dressing.  For his prints this season, Henry also collaborated with illustrator Hattie Stewart who was inspired by the movie poster for cult-favourite film, True Romance.  But our favourite print this season was the repeated school badge print in multicoloured lurex, which was featured on a pant suit, a skirt and a dress--definitely our must-haves of the season!

Chalayan for Vionnet Demi-Couture

Just this week, Hussein Chalayan debuted his first collection of demi-couture for the legendary French house, Vionnet.  As a result of accepting the task, Chalayan decided on an approach to design that ignored the house's design archives, embarking instead on a whole new journey for the storied house.  As inspiration, Chalayan looked to industrial design, though he did infuse a lot of bias cutting into the collection (a technique that Madame Vionnet herself invented).  Our favourite pieces are the ones that opened the collection; the layered organza dresses that revealed peekaboo touches of sheer sections here and there.  Also a hit were the liquid-like sheer plisse gowns--the way they floated down the runway was simply divine.  With red carpet awards season currently in full-swing, we can't wait to see if any of our favourite starlets will be wearing Chalayan for Vionnet this season!

Pre-fall 2014: No. 21

Alessandro Dell'Acqua is having a major fashion 'moment' right now.  The Italian designer has just launched menswear (stay tuned for more of this on the blog soon), he was recently named Creative Director at Rochas and his womenswear label is being the fastest rising 'it' label of the moment.  Why?  Perhaps it's because Dell'Acqua has really discovered his brand 'codes': those signature items that are quintessentially Dell'Acqua.  What are they?  According to recent seasons, it would appear that they include a plaid sweater, a lace pencil skirt, something sequined all-over and re-imagined top in a mixture of lace and prints.  Each season we seem to be saying "this is Dell'Acqua's best season yet" and we are guilty of saying the same thing this season!  He just keeps going from strength to strength and we cannot wait to wear everything he has in store for us for Pre-Fall 2014!
